On the surface, it’s a new roguelike strategy game. Pyrenees It’s clearly inspired by games like Slay the Spire and Balatro, both in style and gameplay. But look deeper and you’ll find it’s a game that requires deep understanding of its tactics and unique setup. Now that Pyrene has finally landed on Steam at a discount, it’s the perfect time to dive back into the deck-building genre or try it out for the first time.

Pyrene will be the first to admit that it looks similar to many other roguelikes in the genre. Nevertheless, beneath the surface it is closer to a traditional strategy game. You control a single character unit and strategically set its path as it encounters various enemies on a grid of cards. The blocks on this grid can contain anything from valuable items to enemies and resources. It has a simple setup that is very easy to understand, but has a ton of depth.

With seven hero characters to choose from, each villager is ready to take on hordes of demons with unique abilities that change the way Pyrene fights. Each character has their own unique abilities, such as dealing ice or poison damage, which definitely increases the replayability of this game, meaning it’s important to find the one that suits you.

In the launch trailer below, developer Two Tiny Dice shows how Pyrene takes the classic roguelike elements we know and love: multiple paths, randomly generated scenarios, new cards to collect, and ways to acquire new gear and upgrades. But there’s a catch as you play: you can’t backtrack on an open space, so you’ll need to think carefully about where and when to go, as the game will tell you exactly what’s going to happen on the next card space.

But if you’re ready to buy, Pyrene will be released on Steam for a 15% discount of $12.74 / £9.71, with the sale running until Friday 20th September. You can find the game here.
