Its entire historic center is a picturesque UNESCO World Heritage Site, there’s art everywhere, and the food here is insanely delicious. I’ve been visiting the city off and on for the past sixteen years and am always blown away by how gorgeous it is. Visiting here feels like you’ve stepped back in time. Since Florence is such a popular destination, there are tons of hotels here. Some of them are great, and some of them not so great. Over the years, I’ve stayed in…

Kyiv, Ukraine – After almost two years of military service on the front lines of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Alina’s husband is “enraged” about the new mobilisation law. Ukraine’s parliament dopted the law on Thursday after months of debates and almost 4,300 revisions. Alina said her husband, who requested anonymity, and brothers-in-arms are dumbfounded by the scrapping of service limits. Earlier versions of the law had envisaged demobilisation after 36 months of service. Without the limits – and with the failure of last year’s counteroffensive and months-long delays of Western military aid – they realise that their service may only end…

Aude, via Wikimedia Commons Blind trust in institutions almost always spells disaster. Growing up, I can recall a sense that questioning certain groups was to be less than patriotic. Don’t question military brass; they’d never lie to the American people. Trust what the evening news and morning paper tell you; it’s the journalist’s responsibility to report the facts and expose wrongdoing. While there have always been pockets of individuals smart enough to know that questioning institutions and verifying information are a citizen’s right and, in many ways, responsibility, the trend only took off in the last few years. Luckily, there…

Bangkok, Thailand – Singapore has responded to United Nations pressure by cracking down on sales of weapons through its territory to Myanmar, delivering a serious blow to the embattled generals, who seized power in a coup more than three years ago. Thomas Andrews, the UN special rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar, told Al Jazeera that the city state’s government “immediately responded” to his 2023 report that found Singapore-based entities had become the third largest source of weapons materials to the military and were “critical” to its weapons procurement. “My subsequent report to the Human Rights Council found…
