Jakarta, Indonesia – Indonesia will see almost 10,000 people, including some from the country’s ethnic Chinese minority, competing in Wednesday’s general elections to become one of 580 lawmakers in the national parliament. According to Indonesia’s General Elections Commission (KPU), there are 9,917 candidates representing 18 political parties across 38 provinces. Among those running are Indonesians of Chinese descent, who accounted for about 2.8 million of Indonesia’s then-237 million people, in the 2010 national census. The more recent census in 2020 did not list its ethnicities. For Chinese Indonesians, democracy has afforded them political rights that were once restricted. During more…

For a sport that really loves to tout how tough its players are, hockey players don’t seem to have much tolerance for anything that makes them feel bad in the slightest. At least on the ice. Morgan Rielly of Toronto was just the latest to wet himself when an opponent reminded him just a little too much that the Leafs had lost a game: Can the Florida Panthers make a comeback? | Agree to Disagree Did you know that Ridly Greig was breaking some unwritten rule that you can’t fire a slapshot into an empty net at the end…

Johnson, notably, previously voted in favor of legislation that would have drastically reformed the 702 program with a slew of privacy protections. Despite the uncommon bipartisan support for reforming Section 702, sources familiar with the negotiations say pro-privacy amendments have a history of dying in backroom deals. An amendment proposed last summer to ban the US military from tracking Americans’ cell phones without a warrant was snuffed out in a closed-door session despite winning widespread support in the House. Yet another amendment—which would have done little to interfere with the federal government’s domestic surveillance work—likewise gained support in the House…

Feb. 12, 2024 – Clean. Natural. If the labels on your cosmetics and skin care products don’t include these descriptors, you’re not looking as great as you could and perhaps even jeopardizing your health. At least that’s the marketing message behind many “clean” and “natural” cosmetics and skin care products, from eyeliner to foundation to moisturizers and more. Both markets are booming, analysts say. The natural cosmetics market is estimated to reach $1.87 billion in the U.S. this year, up 7.1% from last year, according to Statista, a data platform. And Grand View Research says the U.S. natural skin care product…

In September of last year, I saw a connection in the case of TE Connectivity Ltd. (NYSE:TEL), on the back of a sound position, long-term growth, and reasonable valuations. The trouble with the company is that despite its positioning, the company has not fully lived up to its promises in terms of sales growth, although recent margin progress has been impressive. While the sales performance is not yet too impressive, I am pleased with the margin progress, and, therefore, I am willing to stick to a modest long position, with no intention to alter this position anytime soon. A Connection…

President Trump on Monday asked the US Supreme Court to pause the immunity ruling in Jack Smith’s January 6 case in DC. Last week a federal appeals court stacked with Biden judges denied Trump immunity in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s January 6 DC case. The three-judge panel for the DC Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Trump immunity claims: Florence Pan (Biden appointee), Michelle Childs (Biden appointee), and Karen Henderson (George W. Bush appointee). “We have balanced former President Trump’s asserted interests in executive immunity against the vital public interests that favor allowing this prosecution to proceed,” the three-judge panel wrote.…

Opinion Pennsylvania State Rep. Kevin Boyle (D) was caught on video appearing to be heavily intoxicated and engaging in a verbal altercation with patrons and staff at a bar in Montgomery County. Boyle was reportedly thrown out of Gaul & Co. Malt House in Rockledge, Pennsylvania, but not before literally playing the “do you know who I am” card with employees late last week. “I can f***ing end this bar by the way, I’d f***ing end this bar if I wanted to,” the Democrat can be heard shouting. “You’re all f***ing a**holes by the way.” The Democrat wasn’t nearly done,…

Several of our members have asked about preferred stock. Does it fit in an income factory? If so, where? It’s a good question. Preferred stock has certain qualities of both equity and debt. How should income investors like us, who focus on maximizing income growth through reinvesting and compounding high yields, regard preferred stock? It obviously appears to have some characteristics that make it a candidate worth considering. The question then becomes, how does it compare with other alternatives, like senior loans and high yield bonds, as well as high-yielding stocks, like utilities, real estate, energy-based MLPs, etc. Here are…
