When more than $400 million worth of crypto was mysteriously pulled out of the coffers of what was once the world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange, FTX, on the very day that it declared bankruptcy in November of 2022, many initially suspected insiders at the company—including, potentially, then CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, now convicted of fraud. But clues left across blockchains over the past year suggested instead that external thieves had chosen a particularly inconvenient moment during FTX’s meltdown to pull off an enormous heist. Now, new clues revealed in a US Department of Justice indictment suggest something even more surprising: Some of…

By Kristen Shifflett, OT, as told to Keri Wiginton “Will I go completely blind from this?”  That’s the question everyone with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) always asks. And they melt upon themselves with calmness when I say, no, you’ll just need to do some things differently. If you have geographic atrophy (GA), an advanced form of dry AMD, you may lose some or all of your central vision. That’s the part of your eye you use to look directly at things, like people’s faces or the words in this sentence. Your medical team may give you shots or other interventions…

If you leaned into your credit card strategy last year and earned a ton of rewards, you may wonder if you’ll need to pay taxes on them. In most cases, no — your rewards aren’t considered taxable income. But this tax season, we’re seeing reports of people receiving 1099s for some sign-up bonuses. Specifically, many Chase cardholders have received 1099s for sign-up bonuses on Marriott cobranded cards, the Amazon gift card they received as the sign-up bonus on Amazon cards, and…

US president seeking re-election likely to have a hard time winning key state because of his support for Israel.] A visit by United States President Joe Biden to Michigan has exposed a growing divide with the considerable Arab-American community in the key swing state ahead of November’s general election. Biden sat down with members of the United Auto Workers union on Thursday after they endorsed his re-election bid, but the president’s motorcade had to take side streets in Warren to avoid some two hundred protesters before arriving at its destination. Crowds of Arab Americans had gathered to display their anger…

The people of Chicago are being mugged by reality. Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale recently blasted the city for giving illegal immigrants $9,000 in freebies every month, between housing, meal vouchers, etc, saying that he would come to Chicago for that as well.   Apple’s Vision Pro headset is set to release for consumers today, but YouTube is not currently building a dedicated app for the device. To fill that void, Christian Selig, the developer who made Apollo for Reddit client, has made a Vision Pro app for YouTube called Juno. Two kodiak bear cubs were seen wandering in Florida, more than 3,600 miles (5,800 km) from their usual habitat in Alaska. The species is related to the brown bear and the grizzly bear. On December 5, a deputy from the Okaloosa Sheriff’s Office was called out, and arrived at the scene to find the bears “very curious” and likely “domesticated”. An investigation found that they had escaped a nearby enclosure run by a “self-proclaimed bear trainer”. The footage was only released after the investigation was complete.

Black History Month is that special time when video game companies try to show consumers how inclusive they are with special Black / African themed in-game cosmetics and messages of appreciation for the three or four Black employees they keep on staff at any one time. In Halo’s case, it’s offering players a special set of armor shaders in colors and patterns typically associated with African art and culture. As a concept, these shaders are totally fine. Individual cosmetics players can use to zhuzh up their armor; cool, I dig it. But the way 343 slapped all these individual pieces…

By Sharon Solomon, MD, as told to Keri Wiginton  Geographic atrophy (GA) is an advanced dry form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Up to 20% of folks with AMD may get it. While we see GA across all populations and races, it’s more common in older folks who have a family history of AMD and those of European descent.  GA tends to progress incredibly slowly, but it can be devastating for the subset of people who get it. However, the FDA recently approved the first drug for GA. And I expect we’ll see more options down the line.  I want…
