The fashion industry writ large reinforces gender norms in many ways, but there’s one every one of us encounters daily: gendered sizing and styling. A faceless entity decides what a man or woman should look like, and if you don’t fit either mold or identify with either label, that’s your problem. Thankfully, there’s a growing segment that offers tools to opt out of that binary. Gender-neutral and gender-inclusive clothing brands offer a wider range of fits and styles than you might find at a traditional company. These companies make clothes for queer, nonbinary, and trans bodies of all shapes and…

45 minutes ago By Sarah Rainsford, Eastern Europe correspondent This weekend, a secluded Swiss resort above Lake Lucerne will be transformed as dozens of world leaders and thousands of soldiers and police descend on Bürgenstock. The Swiss hope that the Ukraine summit might produce the first tentative sketch marks for a peace process, some 28 months after Russia invaded its neighbour. It is the biggest gathering for Ukraine since the full-scale invasion. But with key players like China staying away, and Russian President Vladimir Putin issuing a new ultimatum – demanding Ukraine’s capitulation and calling that a peace proposal – expectations of…

Satellite imagery startup Albedo is preparing for its up-close-and-personal debut. Albedo’s first satellite will take to orbit next spring as the company looks to turn the commercial Earth observation industry upside down with its novel approach and ultra-high-resolution cameras.  The satellite, called Clarity, will hitch a ride to very low Earth orbit (VLEO) on SpaceX’s Transporter-13 ride-share mission. That mission is currently set to launch no earlier than February 2025, so Albedo should have its first satellite operating in orbit this time next year.  Albedo additionally announced seven customers that reserved a portion of Clarity’s image tasking, including satellite imagery…

If you’re struggling with picky eaters, start by looking at your family’s attitude about food.…

The rise of artificial intelligence has been surrounded by plenty of doom and gloom. America’s AI-related anxieties are even uniting Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer recently revealed a bipartisan plan to tackle AI and protect traditional jobs. While there are still many uncertainties about AI’s impact, there is room for positivity when it comes to the economics of flourishing. AI’s current iteration of Large Language Models can strengthen the American Dream by increasing social mobility and decreasing inequality. This potential to…

A democratically elected president who was kicked out of power by the military a year ago should now lose his immunity from prosecution, Niger’s top court has ruled. That decision by the newly created body clears the way for Mohamed Bazoum, 64, to be tried by a military court. He and his wife Hadiza have been detained in the president palace without a telephone since the coup last July. Since then, Niger’s new military leaders have brought in drastic policy changes – including severing defence and diplomatic ties with former colonial power France and pivoting towards Russia. The ruling junta…

While Apple barely mentioned its smart home platform during its WWDC 2024 keynote this week, Apple Home users can still rejoice over an update discovered in the first iOS 18 beta: they’re getting the option to choose a “Preferred Home Hub.” This fixes the problem of your smart home “deciding” to run over Wi-Fi through a HomePod when there’s a perfectly good Apple TV using ethernet sitting right there. Eagle-eyed Redditors on the HomeKit subreddit spotted that, in the iOS 18 beta, there’s a new option to select your preferred Home hub instead of relying on Apple’s automatic selection, the…
