Picking the best PlayStation first-party games of recent years is a tough task. While some of the open-world adventures are certainly similar, there’s still a lot to enjoy in these big-budget games. Set in a post-apocalyptic world filled with robot dinosaurs (which 8-year-old me thought was super cool, and honestly, 26-year-old me thinks the same), you’ll have to rely only on your bow and your wits to take on these giant beasts.

But if you’re going to rave about the games featured here, Returnal is definitely one of them. This sci-fi roguelike is an intense bullet hell shooter wrapped in the best time loop story since Outer Wilds. It’s extremely hard, makes perfect use of your DualSense (if you have one), has a great difficulty curve, and even has a near-infinite Tower of Sisyphus and co-op modes for those who just can’t stand the dank darkness of Atropos.

A 180-degree turn, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a true testament to the series’ modern take. The raunchy humor may be gone, but the bright alien world and frenetic weapon switching are back in full force. Where Returnal had you clenching your teeth and gripping the controller, Rift Apart aims to make you smile – in a silly, but endearing way.
