Michaela DePrince passes away: Sierra Leonean-American ballerina dies at age 29

Michaela DePrince Michaela Mabinty DePrince, the talented Sierra Leonean-American ballerina who captured the hearts of people around the world, has passed away. She was 29 years old. The cause of death has not been revealed. In an Instagram post shared by her official account on Friday, September 13, Michaela’s family confirmed the news of her passing. The caption begins, “Rest in Peace: Ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince.”

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of star ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince. Her artistry touched countless hearts and her spirit inspired many, leaving an indelible mark on the ballet world and beyond,” the statement read. “Her life was defined by grace, purpose and strength. Her unwavering dedication to her art, her humanitarian work and her courage in overcoming unimaginable odds will forever inspire us.”

Mikaela’s team said the late dancer was “a beacon of hope to many, proving that beauty and greatness can come from the darkest places, despite the obstacles.”

“Her time with us was all too short, but her light and legacy will continue to shine for generations to come in the hearts of all who were touched by her story,” the statement read. “Our love and prayers go out to her chosen family, friends and those who loved her.”

Long before her career began, Mikaela was placed in an orphanage during the Sierra Leone civil war. During her time at the orphanage, Mikaela was starved and abused, primarily due to a skin condition called vitiligo. A former member of Dance Theatre of Harlem, she has battled challenges in the industry throughout her dance career. As a black ballerina, Mikaela was often skipped out on key dance parts, such as the role of Marie. Nutcracker.

Apart from dancing, Mikaela also works to support children and many others affected by violence.
